You can find several hiking opportunities in the beautiful Andes of Peru. The most popular is the Inca Trail that Hiram Bingham traveled along when he discovered Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of the Incas”. This trek is a four day, three night, 30 mile adventure. Although the Inca Trail was built about 500 years ago during the Inka Empire (1438-1533), it was only about 30 years ago that people from all over the world started hiking this now famous trail. The adventure starts at an altitude of about 8800 ft. and climbs to the highest point at just under 14,000 ft. The Inca trail then descends to about 8,000 ft. into Machu Picchu. The paths though well kept up, can be rugged and uneven.
Today, in an effort to keep the Inca trail intact, only 500 people (including guides and porters) are allowed to hike per day. The trail becomes booked months in advance and can only be hiked with a qualified guide and trekking company. Your qualified guides will also set up your tent and have all meals prepared for you! If you do not like camping, there is a lodge to lodge 5 day trek into Machu Picchu as well.
